'Queen of Sport'
A poll of some of New Zealand’s prominent newspaper, radio, and television sports journalists has chosen Joan Harnett, the Canterbury and New Zealand netball champion, as successor to Doreen Porter as “Queen of New Zealand Sport.” Sue Hamilton, the Canterbury golfer, Was second in the poll, run by the “New Zealand Sports Digest.” The contest specified only j that the girls must be I prominent in sport at the ’ provincial level. AU 15 selectors were men. Thirty-two girls were named, ranging from teen-agers to women well into their 30s. Mrs Harnett received 14 ! votes, Miss Hamilton 13, i Heather Coombridge ‘ (Waikato, swimming), seven, and Debbie Dougan (Wellington,: athletics) three. Other Canterbury sportswomen to receive votes were Jean Gdgnitz (athletics), Janyie Park-'
house (swimming), Susan Vaughan (cricket), Karen Hosking (athletics), Robyn Clarke (roUer skating), Cathy Whiting (swimming), Rama Phillips (softball) and Valerie Young (athletics).
