(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 5. Continued ascendancy of table reds, and the eclipse of whites, once thought to be the brightest prospect for New Zealand wines, were features of the awards in the annual wine competition sponsored by the New Zealand Easter Show and judged at the Epsom Show Grounds in the last two days. [ A gold medal was won in varietal reds for a Cabernet

by Cook’s, which has not yet put a red on the market. McWilliams, which for many years has been to the fore in quality reds, again took two golds for Cabernet Sauvignon. These three awards for red wines were the only golds! won in the competition. To make the results morel meaningful to the general! public, 21. of the 40 classes; were for wines bought off the shelf from one of three retail outlets nominated by: entrants. These wines are! ■ shown in the results as “commercial.” A further category of I wines in quantity production, which should be even more widely available, was also judged for dry whites and dry reds. SILVER Quantity production. — Dry white: Corban’s Riverlea white, Babich’s dry white. Dry red: Corban’s claret. Penfold’s Burgundy, Penfold’s claret. Riesling. — Commercial: Corban’s 1973. McWilliam’s 1971. Standard: McWilliam’s 1973. Other dry whites.—Standard: Montana Lexia 1973. Moselle. —Standard: Mobile's. Sauterne. — Commercial: Corban’s Gold’ Medal. Rose.—Commercial: Collard’s. Dry red varietal.—Commercial: Lincoln Pinotage 1972, Totara Pinotage 1972. Standard: Mission Pinot 1972-73, Babich Pinotage Cabernet 1972. Villa Maria Pinotage 1971. Pleasant Valley Pinotage 1971.
