William Hartston, a 26-year-old Cambridge mathematician. won the play-off fori the British championship against Michael Basman. aged 27, a Wimbledon civil servant and matched his Cztchoslovakian-bom wife Jana, a 25-year-old medical 'indent, who has held the British women's title for the last three years and a half.
