Plinth may get railing
Wrought-iron railing might' be placed around the plinth) of the Citizens’ War! .Memorial in the Christchurch, Cathedral grounds to protect; it from the public. Railings, might also be added to the; existing wall surrounding the; Cathedral to stop walking across the lawns. The Dean of Christchurch (the Verv Rev. M. 1.. Underhill) said yesterday that there was opinion that the war! memorial deserved reverential treatment, and that it should not be used, as at; present, as a seat for bus, queues to “sprawl over.” ( The decision of the Christ-! church Citv Council to take) more of the Cathedral] propertv than it originally; intended had left the, memorial protruding on to i the footpath. "Something will probably) be necessary to protect it”; he said. Railing might be restored to the top of the wall around the Cathedral to deter pedestrians from making i short cuts across the' Cathedral lawns. Dean Underhill said.
