Mt John sunniest; Milford wettest

Blenheim was the sunniest town in New Zealand last year with 2608 hours of “bright sunshine,” but Mount John, in the Mackenzie Country, was the sunniest place, with 2650 hours. The second sunniest centre was Takaka (2540 hours), reports the Weather I Office. Milford Sound was the wettest centre during 1973,

i with 6665 millimetres of rain, on at least 188 days. At least 0.1 millimetre must fall in any given day to be recorded in the year’s daily total. The Haast was the second wettest centre, with 3459 millimetres over 186 days, followed by Hokitika (2526 over 194 days) and Greymouth (2058 over 190 days).
