New Olympic yachts make good debut
The first of the new Olympic 470 yachts to be raced in Canterbury waters made a winning debut at inter-dub level during the third heats of the Estuary Pennants series on Sunday.
Sailed by the former New Zealand J.C. title-holders, N. and G. England, the 470 won the D class event, providing handicappers with a new challenge. Another new boat Redeem, was guided to victory among the International Moths by (M. E. Seiwood. The 1970 I New Zealand champion, Selwood improved his prospects of performing well at the national and Pan Pacific contest at Lyttelton next Easter. I C. and R. Nordstrom continued their fine form in the ' Sunbursts, and A. Roberts (P class). K. Chirnside (A catamarans), E. L. Snowden (J.C. class), H. Frver (Starlings). R. L. Smith (New Zealand Moths) and R. J. Lloyd (Paper Tigers) also had their i second wins in three Estuary Pennant outings this season. The competitive monotype Finn and O.K. dinghy classes i promise to provide the closest results when the final races are held on March 31. B. G. Winters took line honours in the Finns. The previous heat winners, B. G. de Thier (in Australia with Canterbury’s Little America’s Cup squad) and J. S. Wearn ((transferred to Auckland) were absent from the fleet.
