Saving fuel

Sir,—With the present oil and fuel shortage and price ; change going on could you , please tell me through your newspaper the size (capacity) of the barrels of oil that are frequently being quoted in relation to the producing countries. Are they just a; standard drum like our! 44-gallon drum or some: ’other size? Also could you ’advise as to whether one of these barrels of crude oil 1 • when refined produces just one barrel of petrol, kerosene ior lubricating oil of a type, or does this one barrel refine : down to quantities of each ■of the products?—Yours, •etc., A.J.G, ( January 17, 1974. [Our motoring correspondent replies: “The barrel of crude oil referred to by producing countries holds 34.9726 Imperial gallons of crude oil. The one barrel is ( refined into varying proportions of the differing products from bitumen to aviaItion fuel.”] ( Sir,—l would like to suggest that R. Clarke has a very twisted idea re the shortage. At least six people can travel in a car when only two can get on his bike.—Yours etc., I R. L. CLARKE, j • February 3, 1974, I i Sir, —Another promise has •been broken by Mr Kirk as •he promised petrol would not go up until after the Games, The Government is unjust in its handling of the price. Why did it not be fair to all and raise the price before Christmas when all workers would be treated the same. Those who had to stay and work to keep in(dustry moving are being pejnalised, as all bookings have (been paid for.—Yours etc., LATE HOLIDAY, ( February 2, 1974.
