New Zealand Day celebrations

The first New Zealand Day tomorrowwill be celebrated throughout the country as well as in New Zealand diplomatic posts overseas.

[ The celebrations which will be held at Waitangi will commemorate the sovereignty symbolised by the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, 134 years ago. The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, Princess Anne, and Captain Mark Phillips will attend the celebrations. Those present at the first; New Zealand Day celebrations — as well as a large television audience — will be ( entertained by an historical; pageant “Aotearoa” which ( which will portray the; growth of New Zealand from: the arrival of the Maori people until the present day.; After the pageant the naval > band will Beat the Retreat and the Prime Minister (Mr Kirk) will make an address. This will be followed by an address from the Queen and the unfurling of the New Zealand flag for the first time on the flagstaff at Waitangi.

Until now the Union Jack has always been flown from that flagstaff.
