MARKET Nominal demand for prime stock

Monday is rarely a good day for the selling of prime stock at die Addington market, and yesterdays sale was not an exception.

Although yardings were light, it appeared stocks on hand. Conretail buyers had good sequently, there was little strength in the market in most sections. Prime lambs had a disappointing sale; ewes edged; back in line with the fall in the export schedule, but I young wethers remained firm on last week’s lower; rates. A small entry of prime; cattle had a moderate sale. Handy-weight steers showed; little change, but heavy-; weights were easier.

Prime lambs

Prime lambs had a weak sale. The yarding was 890, compared with 625 last week, and there was a fair selection of lambs of good weights. Competition,, however, was limited, and a good many lambs eased by 50c to 80c a head. Light-weight lambs had; a hard sale, and quite a num-: her were passed in. Prime sheep

Prime sheep had a fair sale,' although ewes were easier. The 1 yarding was again a small one — 1185. compared with 1500 thej previous week—but it included a' good selection of young wethers. I Although these met better cotn-j petition, values were much in: line with the lower rates of last week. Only a few pens reached $l4. Ewes had a steady sale, but! apart from a small selection of butchers’ ewes, the market was 40c to 50c easier. Very few adult wethers were included this week. Prime cattle

Entries in the prime cattle section numbered only 208, com- ! pared with 345 last week, but it appeared to be adequate, for ' the retail trade is reported to have good stocks on hand. Although there were the usual number of regular buyers, there was little strength in the mar- ! ket. A small number of heavy- : weight steers were quoted as being about $lO easier. Lighter- ■ weight steers, after opening on ' a slightly firmer note, levelled back to last week’s easier rates. A very small selection of cows ’showed little change. Shorthorn cows, with calves at foot, at $175.

Vealers

At 110 head, the vealer yard- . ing was much smaller than in i recent weeks. The yarding included a useful selection of ; good heifers, and under better competition, these showed a small improvement. Best vealers sold to $136.50, . with good average at $ll5 to $125, medium at $9O to $llO, and light at $7B to $B5. A small entry of bobby calves ! had a much stronger sale. The market opened much on a par ’ with the low rates of last week, • but with some southern compe- ' tition. it improved steadily as ! selling progressed, closing $8 to l SlO up on last week’s rates. Good black and white bull : calves sold regularly at $lB to $23, with some sales to $27. Demand for heifer calves, however, remained limited, and they : continued to fetch only nominal . prices—sB to $l2.

Fat pigs

A very small yarding of fat pigs was offered, and recent rates were not always maintained. . Baconers were little short of last week’s rates, but inquiry for ! light-weight porkers was limited and values were quoted as being up to $5 easier.
