BEACHES BUSY
Large crowds went to Christchurch beaches during yesterday morning’s heat, but by late afternoon the crowds had thinned out as temperatures dropped. All beach patrolmen—voluntary patrols at weekends only now—reported large, well-behaved crowds of swimmers. Surf conditions were light and no rescues were made. The water was cleared I about 4.30 p.m. at Scar- [ borough when a shark sight- ! ing was reported, but no [ shark was seen and swimming I resumed.
