Bus driver ‘Ted’ to retire
Mr E H. i“Ted”> Prouting, who has been driving buses regu- ! iarly between Lyttelton and Christchurch for the Christ-! • church Transport Board will | retire soon. He was 61 on I I Saturday. I Mr Prouting has been employed in transport for 28 years and a half, first as tram conductor. then as motorman, and later as bus driver. Mr Prouting, who lives in Christchurch, is known as “Ted” to his passengers. He has carried countless waterfront employees, seamen, and travellers from overseas. Some have even given him their home addresses—as far afield as California—to use if he ever gets the chance. For retirement he has no special plans, but he is fond of gardening. =3 # j In answer to inquiries from port visitors, the commemorative stone marking the spot where the Canterbury Pilgrims landed on December 16, 1850, is behind the Lyttelton Post Office. It can be seen from the counter, through the .rear window. On the building next door by the bus stop and clearly visible to all, is a plaque commemorating the site of New Zealand’s first telegraph office (opened, in 1862).
