From last to first
St Vincent, a small island in the West Indies, has the distinction of having won the most points per head of population of all the Commonwealth countries competing at the Games. New Zealand was second, and Western Samoa was third. By winning a gold medal in boxing on the eve of the closing of the Games, F. Lucas (St Vincent) brought his country from being last equal to first. The three points gained from the gold medal, and averaged out among a total population of about 95,000, meant that St Vincent had one point for every 32.000. Although Australia won the most points, with 168 (three points for a gold medal, two for a silver, and one for a bronze), it could manage only fourth place, at one point for even,- 78,000 of population. At the 1970 Commonwealth Games at Edinburgh, St Vincent also came near the top. It was third, with one point for every 90,000 of population. First was the Isle of Man, and second, Australia.
