‘Safety lesson’ in fire

A further lesson for New Zealand on the need to plan fire safety in high-rise buildings had been given by the Sao Paulo blaze, which ; cost more than 200 people their lives, the ! vice-president of the Fire Protection Associa- | tion (Mr G. Dunnachie) said.
New Zealand was now ir the high-rise era, and it was vital that the utmost measures to ensure safety from fire in high-rise blocks be found, he said. Research and experience such as were available in designing for safety in earthquakes must also be
n provided for dealing with s fire safety. ._ “Reliance on regulatory and by-law measures should n be supplemented by design e research aimed at producing safety measures which will provide a total fire protece tion system.” he said. n Mr Dunnachie said New n Zealand was fortunate in e i having been visited last year - by Mr Charles Morgan, president of the National Fire 'Protection Association in the United States. “In his discussions with designers and fire service staff, Mr Morgan explained the depth of the high-rise • fire problem, and called for fja full exchange of informadtion from countries with -'representation in the World t;Federation of Fire Protection 11 Associations,” Mr Dunnachie I said.
