CRICKET BAN
(N.Z.P A.-Reuter—Copyright) SYDNEY. Spectators at the Sydney Cricket Ground have lost a popular diversion that has lasted for decades—running on the field to congratulate players who score centuries or perform other notable feats. The ground authorities, j police, and the New South ; Wales Cricket Association 1 announced the ban. Leading cricketers hate told of being bruised extensively by over- | enthusiastic back-thump-ing, of having cans of beer poured over them, and of suffering such other indignities as having meat pies thrust in their faces. The Australian test captain, I. M. Chappell, welcomed the ban, saying he had nearly been trampled underfoot on completing a century during the fifth test against England during the M.C.C.’s last tour. Melbourne cricket ground imposed a similar ban recently.
