Man dies in fire
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. A man was burned to death early on Friday when fire raced through an old house in Pinehaven, Upper Hutt, shortly after midnight. He was John Lamont Howard, aged 63. The house, once owned by Sir Francis Chichester and his partner, Mr G. Goodwin, was razed. The body of Mr Howard was found in a bedroom, and it is believed that he never left his bed. He was alone in the house. A neighbour gave the alarm by telephone at 12.15 a.m. The house was then well alight, and it was enveloped in flames when the fire brigade arrived.
