New models coming

In spite of all the gloom about the petrol situation, it looks as though 1974 will still be a bumper year for new car models. After three years or more in the pipeline, it is too late in most cases for any re-thinking on the possible consequences of the fuel situation on the designs that are soon to be launched in Britain and Europe, writes John Langley in the "Daily Telegraph.’’ Most of the British manufacturers will have new models to announce this year, although there is some doubt if a new economy model from Vauxhall will be out in time for the motor show in October, Langley writes. Leyland has already promised another “car for Europe,’’ bigger than the Allegro, and Ford has a new sporty-looking machine at an advanced stage. Even strike-hit Chrysler, after a long period of “facelift and make do,” is reported to have a new medium-sized model on the way. There could also be a new sporting Triumph, but perhaps the most exciting British newcomer will be the first genuine four-seater Lotus, powered by the 2-

litre 16-valve engine. With a top speed around 130 m.p.h., it also promises to be remarkably economical —a figure of 50 miles per gallon at a steady 50 m.p.h. in fifth gear is being talked about. It is due out about May and the British price is expected to be around £3500.

Inevitably, some of the most interesting cars will come from Europe. Volkswagen. striving to get away from the Beetle and aircooled rear engine image, will bring out two new water-cooled front wheel drive models to follow the very successful Passat. Perhaps the most surprising, from this company, will be a new “two-plus-two” coupe, faster and, it is said, more economical than the Passat. Code-named the EA 398, its performance will be aided by its lighter weight<l and aerodynamic, sporty- n looking styling. As usuall; these days, it will be offered with a range of J; engine options. ]; So will the other new Volkswagen, the EA337, a four-seater. Beetle-sized family saloon that will be sold alongside the venerable air-cooled car. The coupe is due out about July and!; the saloon about October. The German company will *; make big claims for the i

fuel and servicing economy of these new cars. It’s new “mini,” with an engine of around 900 c.c., will not appear until next year. But with these attractive newcomers, and the Beetle and Passat soldiering on, the German giant is going to heat up the competition in a real dog-fight among the major manufacturers in a smaller market.

If the new big Citroen makes its forecasted appearance, its advanced design features should make it a leading contender for the 1974 Car of the Year accolade. Langley writes. The new 2-litre V 6 engine jointly developed and manufactured for Peugeot, Renault and Volvo should also emerge this year in at least one of these makes.
