(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) CANBERRA, Jan. 29.
The Australian Government will abolish the present system of secondary school scholarships, and replace it at the end of this year with a scholarship scheme for poor families.
Under the present system, scholarships are awarded to schoolchildren who pass qualifying examinations. From next year, the scholarships, varying in value from $l5 to $304 a year, will be awarded to children whose families earn within a set wage scale. The maximum scholarship will be available to families with a total income of $3lOO after a deduction of $3OO dollars per child.
