Tug sought for Maumee
The United States Navy has asked the Military Sealift Command in Washington about the availability of an ocean-going tug to tow its disabled 35,000-ton, 620 ft long oil tanker, Maumee, from McMurdo .Sound to a New Zealand port. The gaint tanker, delivering the annual supply of petroleum products to the Antarctic command, is making its fourth voyage to the Antarctic.
It was first thought the Coast Guard ice-breaker, Staten Island, would tow the Maumee to New Zealand but this change would have forced the cancellation of a scientific programme off the Antarctic coast.
A Navy spokesman said yesterday it was not known whether the Maumee would come to Lyttelton. Attempts have already been made to free the Maumee’s rudder which is jammed hard to port. If the Washington authorities make available a tug it is likely that the Maumee will remain in McMurdo Sound for a couple of weeks until it arrives. If the request is declined then the Staten Island will probably begin its tow by the week-end.
