Big crowds at beaches
[ Commonwealth Games visitors and athletes swelled the numbers cooling off on Christchurch beaches yesterday.
Most beaches had big crowds and surf conditions for swimming were safe. About 500 people were reported at Waimairi beach and more than 400 at New Brighton.
Swimmers at North Beach left the water about 3.30 p.m. when a helicopter flew low over the beach and the word “shark” was broadcast from its loud speaker. Surf patrolmen did not sight any sharks so swimmers were allowed to return to the water.
The helicopter also broadcast its message at South Brighton beach.
