Bronze bid fails
New Zealand lost the chance of a badminton bronze medal when Richard Purser and Alison Branfield were beaten in the play-off for third place in the mixed doubles last evening. Purser and Mrs Branfield lost in two games to Elliott Stuart and Mrs Sue Whetnall, two hardened campaigners in international play, having represented England a total of 41 times.
Five errors at the end of the first game probably cost the New Zealanders the match. At 10-all, they marred their determined play, and after the English pair took the first game, they grew in confidence and easily won the second.
