‘lnadequate’ pensions
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Jan. 29. The latest small pension increase was quite inadequate to enable social security beneficiaries and superannuitants to cope with inflation, the Opposition spokesman on social affairs, Mr L. R. Adams-Schneider (Waikato), said in a statement today. Eighty cents a week for a single beneficiary and 60c for la married person was not (nearly enough to compensate for food, clothing, and other (essential products used by [social security beneficiaries and others on fixed incomes, he said.
It was significant that in the calendar year 1972 (the last year for which the National Government was responsible) pensions were increased by a greater total than the total of the three increases made by the Labour Government during its 13 months of office.
