Angler holds big shark by gills
C.’f.Z. Press Association) TAURANGA. A Mount Maunganui angler, M. Godfrey, on Monday held a struggling 3641 b bronze whaler shark by the gills to prevent it escaping. He hooked the shark oft the Wairoa River mouth, inside Tauranga Harbour, on 801 b line, and brought to the launch Kerib. The shark was tied by the tail to the launch with a chain, and gaffed, but it snapped the chain and ripped out the gaff.
Godfrey seized the shark by its gills with his bare hands, and held it until it could be gaffed again and securely tied to the launch. It was then taken to Coronation Pier, in Tauranga, for weighing. The Tauranga Big Game Fishing Club publicity officer (Mr S. C. Shea) said Godfrey grabbed the fish because he did not want to lose a contender for the Captain Haultain Cup for the biggest bronze whaler of the season. He won the cup in the 1972 season with a 4821 b fish.
