Four houses damaged
(N.Z. Press Association) KAITAIA. A scrub fire damaged four houses and destroyed a 16ft fibreglass runabout, and its motor valued at $5OOO, at Mangonui, off Doubtless Bay, on Monday. Most members of the local 1 fire brigade were 15 miles away fighting another blaze which swept 3000 acres of scrub land. The Mangonui fire raced up a hillside, through high trees, and jumped a road to burst through the window of one house and damage a lounge. 'rhe Kaitaia brigade sent a machine in response to an appeal from Mangonui, and late in the afternoon the fire was thought to be contained. The other scrub fire began on Crown land last Wednesday near Tokerau Beach, and broke out again on Monday morning, jumping a stream and heading towards baches and a 100 acre pine plantation. This also was quelled in the late afternoon. No significant rain has fallen in the district for two months, and the area is under a total fire ban.
