Dearer cars
Substantial increases in new-car prices—possibly as much as between 5 and 10 per cent — might be announced in New Zealand within a week or so, according to spokesmen in the trade.
The increases are expected to be greatest on Australianmade General Motors and Ford cars, resulting largely from recent increases in the price of steel in Australia. Increased steel prices plus higher freight costs as a result of the rise in fuel costs are also expected to lead to a rise in the price of new Japanese cars.
Higher prices for British cars are also predicted, but the devaluation of the pound is expected to offset these increases to some extent.
Dealers say that higher new-car prices will probably result in an easing in demand for new cars but will possibly increase demand for used cars, the prices of which may become slightly firmer.
