A Christchurch woman, Mrs M. Purdie, was selected as one of the five finalists in the annual Dunedin Festival Aria Contest held at the week-end. Mrs Purdie, a soprano, was placed fourth over-all in the finals. Mrs Purdie’s choice of songs for the finals were “Emani,” by Verdi, and “Martern Alla Arten,” from Mozart’s “Seraglio.” Mr P. Power, a tenor, from Dannevirke, won the aria contest, and two Dunedin singers were placed second and third. There were 49 entries from throughout New Zealand in the contest, seven of them from Christchurch.
The judge was Mr B. Hansford.
