Professor Nuthall on schools

Sir, —Those correspondents who have criticised Professor Nuthall’s remarks on New Zealand secondary school education are not quite fair. Although I cannot agree with him that we should abandon a “subjectorientated” syllabus without a blueprint for an alternative, his main point is perfectly valid. Governments over the last decade or so have been trying to use schools to paper over the cracks in our society and secondary schools which have pupils under their care for about

4 per cent of their waking time during the first 18 years cannot possibly take the place of the family or the church as well as play their traditional role. For the rest, his remarks about Queensland’s experience are a warning to those who want to drive the band-wagon of internal assessment at full speed over unknown roads.— Yours etc., V. F. WILKINSON. January 28, 1974.
