The newly-appointed Bis-1 hop of Exeter did not stand* on ceremony when his chauffeur-driven car broke down: In flowing purple robes, he hitched a lift in a coal-truck. The Rt. Rev. Eric Mercer faced a 15 mile journey when the clutch in his threelitre car burnt out yesterday on the way home from a church junction. His chauffeur, Mr Arthur Chandler, said today *‘l stopped the first vehicle that came along, which happened to be a coal-lorry.” | Bishop Mercer, the former Suffragan Bishop of Birkenhead. commented "Life is full of new experiences, but I never thought I would ever ride into Exeter in the cab of a lorrv. I certainly didn’t feel that'it was beneath my dignity to hitch a lift, but it mav have been incongruous. After all, I had to climb into the cab in my cassock.”
