Residents praised

Traffic officers on point duty near Queen Elizabeth II Park for the Games opening yesterday were full of praise for the help they had been given by local residents. Householders took the officers pots of tea and plates of cakes and biscuits, and solved one of the problems of many hours on point duty by making toilets available. “The people around here have been terrific, really terrific,” said one officer from the North Island, a cup of tea in one hand, and a biscuit in the other. “We’d have had a tough time without them.” Some officers who started duty soon after 9 a.m. had not. eaten by 2.30 p.m., but had been kept going by the refreshments brought by residents.
