Game carcase tax
Sir.—ln “The Press” on December 21 the Minister of Finance (Mr Rowling) announced that a withholding tax of 25 cents in the dollar would be deducted from payments made to suppliers of game carcases. Could he explain why the tax is 25 per cent when for opossum it is only 7| per cent. Are they (the Forest Service) going to upgrade shooting tracks, huts and fertilities. To what extent is tax claimable? almost 100 per cent on four-wheel drive vehicles, jet boats, aeroplanes, rifles, lights, batteries, bullets and boots. If this is a way of hitting the big-time shooting operator, it seems to be a way of hurting the casual weekend shooter.—Yours JOHN G. HEWISON January 21. 1974. [Mr C. K. Jones, District Commissioner of Taxes, replies: "I am unable-to comment on the reasons for the withholding tax being set at 25 cents in the dollar or on whether the Forest Service is going to upgrade facilities. Where withholding, tax is deducted from payments received, all taxpayers are required to famish” a return at the end of each year. Claims for expenses incurred in earning the income may be made and credit is allowed for the tax deducted against the total tax assessed on the nett income.”]
