Members of U.D.R.
Sir, —In your article. “Troubled Ulster,” on January 21, you refer to a “leading member of the Protestant. Ulster Defence Regiment.” I would like to point out that the Ulster Defence Regiment is a regiment of the British Army and, like all other regiments, does not discriminate on religious grounds. While the U.D.R. is predominantly Protestant (as is the population of Northern Ireland) it has Roman Catholics in its ranks, and its commanding officer, Brigadier D. Ormerod, is a Roman Catholic. Indeed, several Roman Catholic Ulster Defence Regiment soldiers have been brutally murdered when off duty by the I.R.A. Some readers of your article may h'ave concluded that the kidnapped 'officer ("Major McCabe) was la Protestant terrorist. I think this impresston should be I corrected.—Yours, etc., [ PERCY H. MARSHALL January 21. 1974.
