Australia in search of arms

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

OTTAWA, January 15.

The Australian Minister of Defence (Mr Lance Barnard), who is now in Canada for talks on the possible joint procurement of military equipment, met his Canadian counterpart, Mr James Richardson, in Ottawa, yesterday and will also have talks with the Minister of External Affairs (Mr Mitchell Sharp).

A spokesman for Mr Barnard said that there was a wide area of mutual interest for Canada and Australia. Besides the possibility of joint procurement of arms, Mr Barnard also wanted to see more Canadian involvement in South Sea naval exercises.

The possible joint procurement of a long-range patrol aircraft, was a subject in

which Mr Barnard was especially interested, the spokesman said. Canada wanted one to replace the Argus, and eventually, a multi-million-dollar contract would go either to Lockheed or Boeing. Australia had some Lockheed Orions, but was in the market for more patrol aircraft to replace her aging Neptune bombers. A decision on this had to be taken by April. Australia was also in the market for reconnaissance aircraft, tanks, and destroyers.
