Situation at 8 p.m. A weakening ridge of high pressure extends westward on to the North Island. A weak frontal zone is moving north-east over the south of the South Island. Forecasts: CANTERBURY, KAIKOURA COAST. — Moderate variable winds; considerable high cloud; a few showers at first in the Alps; southerlies, accompanied byisolated showers, likely to spread up the coast during the morning. MARLBOROUGH SOUNDS. — West or north-west winds, strong at times about Cook Strait and fresh elsewhere, but decreasing a little during the day; low cloud, chiefly about Cook Strait; a few light showers; mild. CENTRAL MARLBOROUGH. — Gusty west or north-west winds decreasing; fair warm weather. NELSON. — Fresh westerlies in the far north, dying out this morning.
