Break from flying

Basic flying instruction at the Royal New Zealand Air Force base at Wigram has been suspended until after the Commonwealth Games.

An Air Force spokesman said yesterday that a break in the training programme had been anticipated; the lost flying time — comprising about three weeks — was made up before Christmas. Basic flying training ceased on Monday and will resume on February 4. A limited amount of flying with Air Tourers and Sioux helicopters is likely to continue at Wigram. Helicopters, for example, will be used to assist the Ministry of Transport in controlling traffic during the Games. About 150 men from Wigram will help at the various Games venues. They will act as controllers, ushers, flag and medal orderlies, and drivers.

The Queen’s Colour arrived at Wigram at the week-end. It will be paraded at the opening and closing ceremonies at the Queen Elizabeth Park stadium along with the colours of the other two services.

Tomorrow the 76-strong Band of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, which will be playing at Games venues, is due at Wigram from Wellington.
