Quax has poisoned foot; returns home to Auckland

T. J. L. Quax, the New Zealand favourite for the Commonwealth Games 5000 metres gold medal, has a poisoned foot and has returned home to Auckland. Quax said yesterday the poisoning was “not too serious,” but he wanted to get out of the Games Village for a few days. “Fortunately, our team management has been helpful and co-operated with my request,” he added. The injury was a “silly one,” Quax said. “I hit my foot on a chair a week ago, and it came up poisoned.

“However, I might have been over-doing my training a bit lately, so this is a blessing in disguise. It is forcing me to take a break.” Another New Zealand competitor with an injury problem is the road cyclist, L. A. Cooper. The knee injury which has been giving Cooper trouble since the tours in November cropped up again in an impromptu 75-mile race at Sefton, in which Cooper was thrd. He had an X-ray taken and will know the result of it today.
