World record set by N.Z. paraplegic

DUNEDIN. Phe New Zealand competitor, Mrs E. Rimmer, confirmed her status as one of the world’s top female wheelchair athletes when she won three gold medals and set world and Commonwealth records at the Paraplegic Games yesterday.

Another New Zealander, Mrs J. Douglas, a Kawerau grandmother, also won two gold medals, and set world and Commonwealth marks.

The performances by these two women, who gained New Zealand’s first golds for the games, were among the highlights of the third day of competition. Mrs Rimmer won the class 3 javelin (Commonwealth record). discus (world record) and shot (Commonwealth record), and Mrs Douglas took the class 2 discus (Commonwealth record) and shot (world record). Mrs Douglas’s world record of 4.68 m in the shot put beat the previous mark, set by D. Dwczarczyk (Poland) in 1972, by 0.04 of a metre.

The discus throw of Mrs Rimmer, 16.58 m, beat by 0.34 of a metre, the record held by A. Hattingh (South Africa). An Australian, Mrs T. Freeman, set two world record and won three gold medals. She won the discus class 18, the javelin and shot put.

WIND ASSISTANCE Australian men dominated the track events, winning all finals. Some of the track times recorded were better than existing world and Commonwealth records but were disallowed because of a following wind. T. Giddy, the winner of the 200 metres track sprint on Sunday, was again far too fast for his rivals and he won his 100 m (class 4) in 20.1 sec, which equalled the world record.

Australia also won easily the 4 x 60 metres relay, by 3sec from Jamaica, with England another 3sec behind.

England had its second day of domination in table tennis, winning another three gold medals, adding to the two it took on Monday. England also picked up two silvers and a bronze. FENCING SUCCESSES C. Thomas and his fellow England fencers had another good day, beating Scotland in the final of the team epee, and Thomas added an individual sabre gold to his individual epee gold. An Australian, B. Thwaite, and a Scot, J. L. Ure, will contest the final of the men's bowls singles, both winning their three matches in the earlv rounds yesterday. E. Toye and I.
