Girl climbs down

A 14-year-old girl was persuaded t« come down from the top of the new clinical school budding at Christchurch Hospital last evening after she had threatened to jump.

The girl later told the police she had been walking in the Botanic Gardens before she had decided to climb the six-storey building. She had apparently been standing on a 2in scaffolding pipe for more than an hour before she was noticed.

Sergeant A. N. Waugh talked to the girl for 40 minutes before persuading her to come down about 7 p.m. with the offer of a cup of tea. .

“She was holding on with one hand for most of the time, and when I moved towards her on one occasion she removed both hands and balanced on the pipe,’’ he said. “It was rather terrifying.”
