N.Z. shooters win
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. January 6. Britain’s shooters had their first taste of Trentham’s torrid winds yesterday as they were beaten by New Zealand in an international test.
Over the 300, 600. 900 and 'lOOO-yard ranges New Zealand totalled 3247.143 to Britain’s 3239.172. The pressure was on D. [Collings (Wellington), New ; Zealand’s last shooter. ColI lings had two shots remaining when New Zealand and Britain were deadlocked, and
jhis final two shots of four gave New Zealand an overall lead of eight points. The boisterous north-west wind upset the British shootters, who on the first two days had dominated most events.
Britain began well, being two up on New Zealand at 300 yards, but then New Zealand opened a gap of seven points at 600 yards and increased this to 10 at 900 yards. Britain's first four shooters took six points from New Zealand on the 1000 yard range and it was left to Collings. the last of either team on the mound, to give New Zealand victory.
For New Zealand, P. Green
Auckland) was the top scorer with 185.8 over the four ranges and J. Whiteman (Upper Hutt) followed with 185.10.
The best New Zealand individual score over 1000 yards came from M. Cammock, of Waipukurau, 44.3. The most consistent shooter of the day was R. Rosling (Britain) with scores of 48.1, 48.3, 49.4, and 42.0, for a 187.8 total. The Australian women’s team was also affected by the conditions and was given a 42-point beating by New Zealand. New Zealand was not considered a strong team and the wide margin of its w’in was surprising.
