FAIRLIE OUT OF TENNIS
/.V.Z. Picas .Asset iu‘’i)i< l AUCKLAND B. E. Fairlie yesterday withdrew from the Benson and Hedges open tennis tour nament for the surprising reason that he has no suitable rackets. The tournament opens at Auckland todav. Fajrlie telephoned Mr B. Ryder, chairman of the pro motions committee, saying that he had sent some rackets to St Louis in readiness for an overseas tour. New rackets, which he had been expecting from overseas, had not arrived. Fairlie’s place in the draw — he was not seeded — will be taken by a Pakistani. Saed Meer, who has been playing in Australia.
The organisers had a further setback yesterday when the American, Miss J. Heldman, the No. 2 seed in the women’s singles, had to withdraw because a recurring attack of bronchitis was forcing her lo rest for a month. Her place will be taken by a fellow American, Miss P. Michel.
