Warnings about Heaphy ignored
(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, January 4. Despite warnings by the Forest Service and the police that the Heaphy Track should not be used by tramping parties because of its bad condition after recent rain, some parties are still coming through Westport keen to make the trek.
Many intending to walk the track have arrived at the Karamea end poorly equipped.
Some family groups include yoqng children who •would prove a handicap even if the track was in its most favourable state. One couple ! had planned to take their two children, aged two and [five. Another party had arranged a one-day hike from Karamea and the same ignorance is being shown by others concerning the facilities provided by the Forest Service, badly over-taxed last week when the track was really rough.
