AWARD TO P76
The “car of the year” award in Australia, announced each year by an Australian motoring magazine, has been awarded for 1973 to the Leyland P 76 six and eight - cylinder saloon.
The magazine, ‘‘Wheels'’, has run the award for 10 years. It was not awarded in 1972, as it was felt no new car produced in Australia that year deserved it.
The citation for the 1973 award says that the P 76 “has contributed to the engineering standards of Australian cars.
“It represents proof that Leyland Australia, given the opportunity, can compete directly with the American - owned Holden, Ford and Chrysler products in what is still the biggest and most important segment of the market.”
