Tyre predictions
Car tyres will soon be made entirely from synthetic materials, tyre company engineers say, and the change will probably mean a major improvement in tyre life. Not long ago, all the components of a tyre grew in fields, the Goodyear company reports. All the rubber came from rubber trees, the fabric was cotton, and the adhesives were derived from plants.
Synthetic fabrics for tyre cords came into use about
1938, and more recently, better adhesives have been developed in the laboratory. More than half the rubber used today is synthetic. Tyre engineers say that “dramatic” new developments in rubber compounds and tyre fabrics are already in the research stages with major rubber companies, although extensive testing will be needed before the new materials are used in tyres.
