Dog tracks prisoner
Kenneth Sydney Johns, aged 23, a prison inmate, was remanded in custody* until Friday when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yestei - day on a charge of escaping from Paparua Prison. Prison staff saw him run from the piggery about 8.50 a.m. and gave chase, but he outran them. Constable J. T. Keown saw Johns crossing a paddock at Hornby about 9.15 a.m., and the constable’s dog, Kip, followed his scent 400 yards across several properties and a road to a house. The dog bailed up Johns on a 6ft paling fence, but he jumped on to the roof of a parked car. Constable Keown arrived a few minutes later and arrested him — about 55 minutes after his escape
