High wind
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) HOUSTON, December 19 The Skylab astronaut, Lieutenant-Colonel William Pogue, estimates he passes wind about 500 times a day. When mission control at the Space Centre in Houston asked the Skylab crew what they considered their most disconcerting personal hygiene problem. Colonel Pogue said: “We have to pass so much gas. I don’t want to pass over the flatus problem lightly, because I think about 500 times a day is not a good way to go. It’s just not a nice thing.
“It offends people around you, and the only redeeming feature is that everybody else is passing the same amount of gas. It’s a good thing we’ve got some charcoal canisters taking the stuff out,” said Colonel Pogue.
Space Agency doctors say the problem is caused by a combination of weightlessness, the astronauts* diet, and bubbles that form in the drinking water.
