BOY RESCUED FROM DRAIN

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Nov. 14. A two-year-old Lower Hutt boy was rescued from a maze of underground drains today after his father heard sobs coming from an open manhole cover. Seven firemen took 20 minutes to find Craig Press, of Taita, among miles of underground drains behind his home. The firemen were unable to use breathing apparatus in tfie drains because they were too small, so com-

pressed air was pumped down as they descended into the water. The boy was found unhurt half an hour after his father heard his cries. He was sitting in inches of muddy water. The fireman who found the boy, Station Officer B. J. Jensen, had to drag him along a drain which ran beneath a row of houses and bring him up through a manhole cover in the road. “The firemen were just great,” Mr Press said.
