INCREASED STAKES

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Wellington Trotting Club yesterday announced substantial increases for its remaining meetings this season—five night fixtures and two days at Queen's Birthday week-end. The club, said the president (Mr R. A. McKenzie), would increase prizes for all Cl. C2. C 3, C 4 and C 5 pacing and trotting events by amounts ranging from $l5O to $2OO a race. In the case of Cl races alone this well mean an increase of $l5OO a season. The highlight of the stake rise, however, is a 66 per cent boost for the club’s feature, the Wellington Cup, which will be run on January 15. The cup stake has been increased from $6OOO 'to $10,200, including a $2OO trophy. As it was last year, the cup will be contested by horses assessed at C 9 and faster. Mr McKenzie said the club had increased the stake for lower class races in the light of the Racing Authority’s Incentive payments. He hoped the higher stakes would help owners and trainers visiting Hutt Park.
