S.A. Govt underlines sporting policies

(N. Z. P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG.

The South African Government has given permission for a racially-mixed international cycling contest in Pretoria next April. At the same time, it has rejected an application by a multi-racial cricket club to take a team to Rhodesia. The two moves, announced last night, were seen as underlining the Government’s determination to restrict mixed activities to international events within South Africa.

The South African Cycling Federation secretary, Mr T.

Horne, disclosed the Government had approved the Pretoria event, which will involve foreign riders and contestants from various racial groups.

The cycling event is allowed only because it will include foreign riders. The refusal by the Sports Minister (Dr Piet Koornhof) to allow the Cricket Club of South Africa to take a team to Rhodesia followed earlier official indications that multiracial fixtures inside the country will continue to be banned.

For cricket purposes, Rhodesia is not regarded as “abroad.”
