No sign of driver of car in Avon

Policemen were search, ing the banks of the Avon. River late last evening for the driver of an early model car which struck a tree iii. Dallington Terrace andplunged into the water. Two residents heard the splash about 9 pm. and rushed outside to see the car about a third of the; way across the river near the northern bank. Thewindscreen was broken and the front door was partly open, but there was no sign of the driver. Several residents climbed; into the river, about 4ft deep at the time, and looked around the vehicle before it was hauled out. Two policemen were stationed at a bridge downstream to play a spotlight on any large objects which floated past, although the river was very murky. An ambulance and a dinghy were brought to the area, and a police diver was called In to direct the search. A police spokesman said last evening it was possible that the car had been pushed into the river.
