Murray Grey bull sold to Texas
An 111-month-old Murray Grey bull from North Canterbury has been sold to an American buyer for an undisclosed price but described as a “substantial five-figure sum.”
The bull is from an Australian cow imported by Messrs R. W. Frost and Son, of Femside, from Messrs G. Gadd and Sons, of “The Glen” Stud, New South Wales. The cow was mated in Australia and was carrying the bull calf when she arrived in New Zealand. Sold to Mr F. L. Harper, of Palm Springs, Texas, the bull, Pine Leigh Indian Chief, will leave Auckland by air on Tuesday for Honolulu, where he will be placed in quarantine for 30 days before going to Texas. The bull has already attained a weight of 9251 b. The sale was negotiated by the general stud stock department of Dalgety New! Zealand, Ltd. American breeders were I
becoming very interested in Murray Grey cattle because of the quality of their meat; their early maturity; and their ability to do well under adverse conditions, said Mr Frost yesterday. His cow was already due to calve again about the end of November, having been artificially inseminated with semen from a bull owned in partnership by Messrs L. C. Early (Sefton) and J. F. Wyllie (Omihi), who bought the animal two years ago from West Australia. Already a prominent breeder of Jersey cattle, Mr Frost intends also to develop a Murray Grey stud, using the present cow and the bull of Messrs. Early and Wyllie and also semen imported from Australia.
