Lansdowne Valley sub-station

Sir,—R.A.G. is either being deliberately misleading or does not read the newspaper properly. It is clear to me that no sub-station will be built in the Lansdowne or Baisweil area. R.A.G. quotes “The Press” of February 27, but in “The Press” two days earlier Mr McGuigan announced that the switching station would be built 15 miles south of Christchurch with only a supply point under the existing line in the Halswell area. Does R.A.G. not know the difference between a sub-station and a suppl}' point? — Yours, etc., MARJORIE McCREANOR. October 11, 1973.

Sir, —“Not Confused” obviously did not read Mr Walker’s original statement. If he had, the list of contradictions made by the M.P. for Lyttelton before and after the election would have become apparent. It was easy enough for Mr McGuigan to say there would be no substation. It is a very different matter for him as Minister of Electricity to over-ride his |own technical advisers and! try to find an alternative site.! On December 16, 1972, Mr iMcGuigan said: “A decision! (on the new site) will be! made as quickly as possible.”! On February 27, 1973, he said: “An alternative site will be found.” On June 26 he said "No firm decision has been: made regarding the siting.: The Electricity Department is I still investigating.” On August 24: “No sites had been chosen yet. We are pressing on immediately with the selection of sites.” On October 6: “Land needs were being investigated.” Is 10 months of confusion a “quick decision.”?—Yours, etc., D.W.S. October 11, 1973.
