PLANS NOW FOR OCEANIA JUDO

The Canterbury Judo Area Association will probably be host to next year’s Oceania championships, in the Christchurch Town Hall.

The area director, Mr M. G. Ravenscroft, said it was New Zealand’s turn to organise the event and the New Zealand federation had offered the tournament to Canterbury. Officials from the Canterbury association would be inspecting the Town Hall next week to make sure the facilities were to international regulations. “The problem is whether there is enough space to lay the mats, but I’m confident the hall is big I enough,” he said.

Mr Ravenscroft said the tournament would be held in Christchurch next June, July or August, over two days. Last year’s event was held in Sydney. The association expected entries from Australia, New

Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Asia and New Zealand. Mr Ravenscroft said an invitation would be made to the Aisian Judo Union to field a team. “The New Zealand association has an invitation to attend the next Asian championships, so we will make a similar offer.” In conjunction with the. major tournament, there would be another contest for entrants from each of New Zealand and the states of Australia. The two countries would field national teams, but they might also enter individual teams.
